Heading up north

By , June 11, 2010 10:35 am

I’m going to Minnesota for a wedding this weekend, so probably won’t post much (if anything) until I get back Monday night. Have a good weekend, everyone!

Should I stay or should I go?

By , June 4, 2010 11:48 pm

I’m about ready to quit. I’ve been at my job a little over two and a half years, and it’s been an up-and-down experience. Ultimately, I really like the organization, love the people I’m immediately working with, and can’t stand my bosses. I should clarify that my bosses are amazing artists. They’re kind to animals, don’t litter, and are generally good people. But they’re shitty bosses.

They communicate poorly (both with each other and their employees), aren’t respectful or appreciative, are dismissive and rude, always assume the worst – both of situations and individuals – and they’re slowly driving me insane.

So I think I’m going to actively start looking for another job, and put in my notice as soon as I find one. (Hopefully sooner rather than later.)

Sunbathing!

By , May 23, 2010 11:52 pm

Lets pretend my bathing suit made me look like this.

Today was a beautiful, sunny, breezy, 90-degree day in Chicago. My roommate and I took advantage of the weather to sunbathe on the roof. (I think I’ve mentioned this before, but we have awesome landlords.)

I actually found a halter bikini top I like, so didn’t feel like a total fat blob, along with the bikini-bottom-underneath-short-trunks for a bottom. This marks, I think, the first time I’ve ever felt comfortable in a bathing suit. In my life. FTW! (No, you don’t get pictures. Neener neener neener.)

Unfortunately, CVS’s “Continuous Spray Sunblock” fails on all of its advertised features: It does not spray, it particularly does not spray continuously, and it only blocks the sun intermittently. Hence I have a dinner-plate sized burn on my tummy and boobs, as I enjoyably but regrettably chose to sunbathe topless. Which felt great at the time, but is now itchy and pink. (There’s a visual for ya!) Though, honestly, most of where I’m burnt wouldn’t have been covered my the top, so I don’t feel too much regret over my choice.

In any event, I’m sunburnt. (Sunburned? Sunned burn?) I have a sunburn. Summer is finally here!

Guest posts and reader questions

By , May 13, 2010 10:50 am

Hey gang! I’m still recuperating, slowly but surely. So even though I’m feeling noticeably better each day, I’m still a long ways away from 100%. As such, I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back to posting here as frequently or as verbosely as I like to, so I wanted to open up two questions to You, The Readers.

First, I’d love to provide an opportunity for guest posts, if anyone is interested. If you have a topic you’d like to write on, let me know. If you have an older post from your own blog you’d like to expose to a wider audience (meager as that ‘wider audience’ may be!) let me know that, too. Shoot me an email at blog [at] fridaythang.com; I’d love to hear from you.

Likewise, if anyone has any questions for me they’re dying to have answered, or topics they would like to see me write on, I’m open to that, too. (Shamelessly stealing a page from Bond’s book.) Leave a question or a topic in the comments, or shoot me an email.

I hope to hear from you!

I live!

So I’m out of the hospital, finally. (Truth be told, I got out on Friday.) I have a few posts in the pipeline, but wanted to send out a quick “Hello” to reassure my adoring fan(s) that I haven’t totally forgotten about you.

Recovery is slow, and tiring, and boring. Mostly been laying around, though I did go to work for a few hours today. It was exhausting (not in a bad way, just in a “I haven’t recovered my strength” way) but it made me feel like I’m a real person and not just a TV-movie-watching couch potato.

I’m going to take a nap, but I do have an open question: What exciting story should I use to explain my surgical scars? I have four nickel-sized holes on my tummy, and need a good explanation. :)

Staying positive

By , May 30, 2009 4:44 pm

I recently read a post about luck. It said that you focus on remembering situations of good luck and not focussing on bad, you’ll feel like a lucky person, even if your “actual” luck (whatever that means) doesn’t change.

In that vein, I’m not going to focus on the brat I heard in the hall today asking her mom, “Was that a boy or a girl?” (She really is a brat. Her teacher confirmed it.)

Instead, I’m going to focus on something my roommate told me.

Real classy, Amazon.com

By , April 12, 2009 7:36 pm

I’ve already made a concentrated effort to purchase books and comics from Chicago feminist bookstore Women and Children First, instead of Amazon.com. Basically, to borrow from one of my own posts, “Yes, it costs me a bit more than Amazon, but it’s important to me to have such a resource in my neighborhood. I want to live down the street from a store that carries books like Whipping Girl and Yes Means Yes (and has staff who have read them!) and hosts book clubs like The Intergenerational Feminist Book Club and (way on the other end of the spectrum) the Buffy Discussion Group. That said, it’s a shame their website is so slow…” So I’ve already been moving away from Amazon.com.

But this latest post from Jezebel.com just gives me more reason to do so. In short, Amazon is removing sales rankings from some (but, randomly, not all!) GLBT books on the basis of their “adult” content, including some books aimed at kids and young adults.

Sears Tower, we hardly knew ye…

By , March 12, 2009 9:10 am

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Sears Tower’s new owners will be (ugh) changing its name (I just threw up a little bit in my mouth):

Sears Tower will change its name to Willis Tower under the terms of a new lease signed by global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings.

Willis Group plans to consolidate five area offices and move nearly 500 Associates into Willis Tower, at 233 S. Wacker, initially occupying more than 140,000 square feet on multiple floors.

I can’t believe they thought this was a good idea. The CEO was quotes as saying, “Having our name associated with Chicago’s most iconic structure underscores our commitment to this great city, and recognizes Chicago’s importance as a major financial hub and international business center,” but what he missed out on is that it also makes you a GIANT TOOL!

I’m all riled up now…

You what?!

By , December 7, 2008 9:27 pm

A conversation G and I had at the grocery store…

Me: I think I’m gonna grab a tea sampler. I’m trying to get into tea.

Her: Blank stare of utter confusion

Me: What?

Her: What do you mean “what”? That’s like me saying, “Oh, I’m trying to get into college football.”

On Blogging

By , November 13, 2008 11:34 am

I’m sitting in an Internet Marketing course to discuss how the arts org I’m General Manager of can better utilize ye olde Interwebs and the presenter is talking about organizational blogging.

I felt bad about not having made a post in over a week, so figured this is as good a time as any.
