Kickstarter reward ideas

By , June 12, 2011 8:07 pm

I’m about to launch another Kickstarter campaign (for gas money to KC and Indy) and was hoping for suggestions and ideas on the donation rewards. Here’s what I have so far:

$1 - You will receive a special Thank You in the show program for ‘No Gender Left Behind’

$15 – I will send you POSTCARDS from Kansas City, Indianapolis, AND Chicago, PLUS the all of the above.

$35 - A BEHIND THE SCENES video from the rehearsal process, PLUS all of the above.

$50 - TWO FREE TICKETS to No Gender Left Behind at any point during the tour, PLUS all of the above.

$75 - A ROAD TRIP PHONE CALL from the side of the road between Chicago and Kansas City or Chicago and Indianapolis (your choice) PLUS all of the above.

$100 - A SIGNED SHOW POSTER from No Gender Left Behind, PLUS all of the above

$250 - I will WRITE YOU A SHORT STORY on a topic or theme of your choosing, PLUS all of the above.

$500 - I will send you a personalized LEGO REBECCA of your very own, PLUS all of the above.

$1000 - I will TAKE YOU MINI-GOLFING (or Go-Karting, or whatever) the next time I’m near your home town, PLUS all of the above! There may even be pizza involved!

$2500 - Wow, you want to go all out, don’t you? The next time you are in Chicago I will TAKE YOU ON A PERSONAL TOUR OF CHICAGO, including food, sight-seeing, activities, and a scavenger hunt of my devising. PLUS all of the above!

For the last three, I’m mostly being silly. I don’t expect anyone to take me up on ‘em, but you never know! At the same time, I’m torn if the silliness takes away from the show about trans issues stemming from my being fired… Thoughts?

One final plea before heading to DC

I don’t like asking for money. Really I don’t, despite my seeming predilection for doing so. But my current fundraising effort, a Kickstarter project to help get me to DC to push for transgender equalityis very important to me. This’ll be my last blog reminder before the fundraising bell rings on Friday afternoon, and the response has already been overwhelming. I’ve already beaten my original fundraising effort, and am now trying to raise additional money for my upcoming show, No Gender Left Behind. If you have already donated – or you’re unable to do so – I’m sorry for once again subjecting you to this. For the rest of you, I absolutely won’t hold it against you if you don’t donate. This post is not an attempt to guilt you into donating, and I’ll love you just as much if (for whatever reason) you don’t end up donating by Friday. This post isn’t an attempt to guilt you.

This post is an attempt to enlist you.

Guilting people is no fun, and part of the reason I dislike fundraising is it feels like part and parcel of the process. But what if, instead of guilt, I talked about solidarity? About how I know for a fact that, at some point in their life, every single person reading this has done something outside their assigned gender roles. Trans equality – and raising awareness of trans issues – isn’t just about me. It’s about protection against workplace discrimination for women with short hair, and men with long. (Legal in 37 states!) Protection against bullying for boys playing with dolls and girls with trucks. (Legal in 42 states!)

Unless you’re the picture-perfect gendered individual (and, lets be honest, if you’re reading this blog you’re probably not…) you need and deserve this legislation, too! So do your friends and family and children and loved ones. So I’m asking you, one last time, help me get to DC and back, and stage No Gender Left Behind. Current donations are being matched, and even $1 is helpful.
Much love,
-Rebecca

Please Donate!

As some of you may have noticed, a “Donate” link appeared a few weeks ago along the top of The Thang Blog. From that page:

Donations – of any amount – are always appreciated. But, you may ask, what would your donations be going towards?

In addition to being a blogger (a hopefully interesting blogger at that!) I am a performance artist. My most recent piece, Ares and Aphrodite, was featured this past November at Links Hall in Chicago as part of a larger mentorship program I was involved in, led by the fabulous Tim Miller. The piece was an exploration of my experiences growing up and living as a transgender woman, and was very well-received. The script is available here, with video of the performance itself here and here.

I’m currently working on expanding that twenty minute piece into a full hour of theatre, and I’m fortunate enough to be returning to Links Hall this December to share my expanded work. Every penny you donate will go toward that end, helping me cover the $1,550 in space rental fees, printing costs, technical contractors, and the many other costs associated with producing innovative and exciting theatre.

I’ve already raised over half the money I need for this performance. Unfortunately, I’ve already spent even more. Please donate today!

  • Donate One Dollar to pay for the printing cost of a single  poster
  • Donate Five Dollars to pay for show makeup
  • Donate Twenty-Five Dollars to pay for props
  • Donate Fifty Dollars to pay for a lighting designer
  • Donate One Hundred Dollars to pay for poster design costs
  • Donate Two Hundred Dollars to pay for a photographer
  • Donate Eight Hundred Dollars to pay for space rental for the show

As of September 1, 2009, I have received support from the following generous donors and organizations:

Any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Help support my art!
I’m just over 50% toward the $1,550 I need to finance my December performance
