Sex and vegetarians

I’ve been thinking about sex. With men.

This isn’t something I’m sure I want to do – now or ever – but it’s something thathas been on my mind for a long time. And, as my transition had progressed and I’ve moved from being perceived as a man to being perceived as a woman, the idea has seemed less and less outlandish.

It’s kind of like being a vegetrarian.

Review: Almost Perfect

The cover of 'Almost Perfect'

A partially obscured shot of a female face. How original for a book dealing with a trans character...

I just finished reading Almost Perfect, a young adult novel about a high school senior, Logan, who falls for a girl, Sage, that he eventually learns is trans. It’s well-written and believable, told from the first-person perspective of Logan, and does a good job of being injecting humor without being light or unrealistic. As someone who is a trans fiction aficionado, it was very refreshing to find a trans main character in a book that isn’t sensationalist or belittling. Or overly optimistic and picture-perfect.

There will be spoilers beyond this point, so consider yourself warned. If you’re looking for a recommendation, I would definitely recommend Almost Perfect. But a title like that should tell you that it has an ending which is – at best – bittersweet.

Ba(r/t) Mitzvah

By , June 15, 2010 12:08 am

Hello again! I’m back from Minneapolis, and done (for the moment) with posting ridiculous photos from my trip. Last week, before I left, I participated in a panel discussion organized by the National Council of Jewish Women, as part of their Chicago chapter’s effort to build bridges between Jewish and LGBT communities. I was speaking as a “transgender activist,” which sort of amused me, and spoke alongside Lisa, a  representative from the Center on Halsted and the Rabbi of Or Chadash.

Jewish Star on rainbow pride backgroundThe conversation was really interesting, and I’ll get to the meat of it later in this post. First, I want to talk about an interesting and thorny topic that came up during the discussion section of the evening. I claimed that, to truly integrate and embrace the LGBT community, Judaism needs to move away from inherently gendered ceremonies such as Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. That, even if the ceremonies are ‘equal’ (which is effectively true in liberal Judaism today, even if that wasn’t always the case) the idea of ‘separate but equal’ for boys and girls is a bad precedent to set at the threshold to adulthood.

I know this is going to be a tough pill to swallow for many Jews, and I said as much at the panel discussion. The idea of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is ingrained in the idea of those ceremonies. But it’s flawed, problematic, and oppressive, particularly for trans Jews.

The first pic is from the park where the wedding ceremony took place. It was very pretty! The second is from the outside of the old converted theater where they held the reception. Lots of fun. I’m sleeeeeepy.

I’m going to Minnesota for a wedding this weekend, so probably won’t post much (if anything) until I get back Monday night. Have a good weekend, everyone!

The male gaze can jump in a lake

By , June 8, 2010 8:18 pm

While driving to work this morning, someone pulled up along side me at a stoplight and motioned for me to roll down my window. He was gesturing to the back of my car and saying something, and I worried that I had a light out, my trunk was open, or (worst of all) I hadn’t noticed a flat tire.

I rolled down my window and he started talking across the gap between our cars. I couldn’t really hear him over the rain, complicated by his soft voice and foreign accent. I finally understood that he was complimenting me on my bumper stickers. This happens every so often, and I always get a kick out of it. I have a couple dozen bumper stickers on the back of my car, ranging from the political – about Obama or women’s rights – to the silly (“No, I will not fix your computer”). I thanked him, and started to roll my window back up, when he yelled something I heard very clearly:

“Wanna meet up some place?

I rolled up my window, turned back to the light (green, by this time), and sped away.

Toys!

By , June 8, 2010 10:39 am

I bought this one! This one! Mine!

Just ordered an electric bike. I’ve been talking about this for a while (over a year, in fact) but I’ve always resisted.

I have the money saved up, but I always have trouble spending money on myself. It’s so easy to justify not spending, to save for that next thing (or, say, the hospital bills I’m still getting). At the same time, this account was specifically set up to save for fun things, and this is fun!

I finally had a chance to test drive the one I ended up buying, the Currie EZip Trailz, and it was a lot of fun. It’s the low end of the Currie line (an already lower-end electric bike company) and I really seriously considered getting a more expensive model. But this version was a lot of fun to ride, even though it was a heavy (steel) beast.

And, dammit, I’m having a tough time right now. And I wanted a toy. Yay!
