Fun retro photos

By , June 30, 2010 11:35 pm

I was jealous of one of my coworkers, as she has an iPhone and lots of nifty software. One of them allowed her to take retro-fabulous photos on her phone, so I had to find something similar for Android. Enter Retro Camera. These were all taken on the bike ride home from work this afternoon. Yeah, it’s kind of silly, and the application itself definitely isn’t as smooth or sexy as her iPhone app, but I had fun with it.

Questions on being trans, from highschoolers (pt 6)

By , June 29, 2010 8:23 pm

Just when you thought it was over, there are a few more questions to answer!

  • Did you dress like a girl before you considered yourself transgender?  (Dress in drag, I guess?)

Occasionally, but not a lot. And that’s due in large part because of that language: it felt like dressing in drag. And the last thing I wanted, the last thing I ever wanted, was to feel like a boy in a dress. So while I did experiment every so often with sneaking something from my mom’s wardrobe, it was never that satisfying. (I denied taking her clothing the one or two times she confronted me about it. Maybe, in retrospect, if I’d come clean – and talked about my desires to not be a boy – my life might have turned out very differently.

Once I was able to put a name on my discomfort – I was trans, not a crossdresser – I was able to start experimenting with ways of feeling more feminine. Things like growing my hair out, shaving my legs, and so on. That eventually turned into buying women’s clothing, but by that point I’d say I was actually transitioning and not just experimenting.

Circumcision

By , June 28, 2010 7:19 pm

Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melech ha’olam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al ha-milah. Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melech ha’olam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu lihach-neeso bivreito shel Avraham aveenu.

Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and has given us the command concerning circumcision. Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and hast commanded us to make our sons enter the covenant of Abraham our father. (Source)

Eight days after birth, Jewish boys are supposed to be circumcised as part of the covenant between God and Abraham (in Genesis), as specified in Leviticus. In this way, Jewish boys are supposed to continue the line of the Children of Israel, fulfilling the obligations and duties laid out for them in the Torah.

There are no required rituals or ceremonies to mark the birth of a girl.

Another ‘meh’ pride

By , June 27, 2010 5:18 pm

Last year I was able to go to the Chicago Dyke March, which was a ton of fun. However, it left me too exhausted to actually go to the Pride Parade the next day, meaning I missed it entirely.

Last night, I was volunteering at a benefit for the theatre company that I’ve been working with for 15+ years. I absolutely want to help the theatre, and am thrilled the event was (from what I could tell) a success, but I didn’t really want to be there. If you know what I mean. I’m glad I did it, but didn’t have fun.

This partially had to do with my friends. I was helping at the check-in and check-out table, meaning I was working basically from 4PM until after 11PM. My friends were spotters for the live auction, meaning they were only working for an hour or so here and then, and then just hanging out.

I ended up staying for the after party, held for all the volunteers, which was looking to be a lot of fun until I crashed around 1AM and ended up taking a cab home. Meanwhile, I heard the after party was still rocking until about 4AM.

So again, today, I was too exhausted for the pride parade. I think I’m going to try to go to the Andersonville Back Lot Bash later tonight, but I’m kind of disappointed in yet another ‘meh’ Pride.

Three Questions

By , June 24, 2010 3:01 pm

Another writing exercise from my director.

1. What do you love?

I love getting out of my head. The feeling of doing something purely physical: playing a song on the piano that I know really well and flowing into the music; biking along the lakefront; holding a really good handstand or whipping around on a Spanish Web; a mind-blowing and body-cleansing orgasm.

I love solving a problem that has been itching at me. Of making technology bend to my will, and deliver satisfying and consistent results. I love the relief that comes when a solution is Right and True.

I love my body when I’m able to feel feminine. I love looking down and seeing my breasts, feeling their weight. I love the wonder of skin and and bone and muscle.

I love a strong sense of community: artistic, social, familial. Of understanding, and being understood. Knowing, and being known.

A yellow sky

A street

DOOOOOM!

There were some major storms in Chicago today. In the brief period after the storm ended, but before the sun set, the sky was a truly unusual color. None of these pictures really capture the colors as I saw them, but they’re all unaltered photos.

Morning Routine

By , June 22, 2010 5:22 pm

This is a writing exercise from my director. Enjoy!

Materials Needed  (generally in order of use)

  • Alarm, with remote
  • Phone
  • Computer
  • Robe
  • Clothing
  • Bathroom scale
  • Shower door
  • Shampoo
  • Mirror
  • Shaving cream and razor
  • Face wash
  • Conditioner
  • Loofah and body wash
  • Detachable shower head
  • Towel and head towel
  • Blow dryer
  • Tooth brush
  • Pills
  • Comb
  • Hair product

My alarm goes off. It’s a beep that begins quiet, and slowly gets larger. It used to be music, but I became trained to listen for soft music, and so things in the next room our outside were waking me. My alarm is a Bose stereo, undoubtedly overkill for the simple jobs of telling time and waking me, but I like it.

Therapissed off

By , June 21, 2010 5:03 pm

A phrenology chartLate last week, I had a session with the doctor who is prescribing my citalopram. It’s only the second time I’ve seen him, and he’s a nice guy. However, he’s (self-admittedly) ignorant of trans issues, so I’ve had to do more explaining and defining in sessions with him than with Laura, my primary therapist.

I was telling him about my frustrations with my dad, and explaining how his use of the wrong names and pronouns really hurts me. The doctor’s response was, basically, “So?”

More wedding trip pictures

Becca on a fainting couch

I do declare!

The reception was held in this old, converted theater, with an amazing bathroom. It had fainting couches. On which we, obviously, decided to faint.
